Our Apple Picking Party

Our Apple Picking Party

This year seems to have produced a glut of apples throughout the UK, and we have had a lovely crop ourselves from our little tree in the garden.

We decided to have the grandchildren around after school this week for an apple picking party. It was great fun, very noisy with shrieks of excitement and laughter.

When the last apple was picked we celebrated with homemade burgers and a very rustic apple crumble which seemed to go down a treat.

A very kind farmer with an apple press is going to magic our apples into apple juice. I can feel another party coming on (an apple juice tasting party) hehe.

I have added my crumble recipe because it was yummy, really the only thing different to a normal crumble is that I added muesli which gave it a crunchy top. I would definitely do the same again.

Quick and easy apple crumble

6 Cooking apples or fruit of your choice

Peel, core and cut into not too thin wedges

2/3 table spoons brown sugar

1 pinch of cinnamon (optional)

Crumble Mix

300g (10½oz) plain flour

175g (6oz) brown sugar

200g (7oz) unsalted butter at room temperature. (If like me you are dairy free or vegan, change the butter for a vegetable spread)

85g (3oz) Muesli

Pop the apples into a saucepan, add just enough water to cover them,  sprinkle over 2/3 table spoons of brown sugar. Cook over a medium heat until just becoming soft, take off the heat and strain off excess fluid, let it cool a little and transfer into an oven proof dish.

Pop all the crumble mix into a bowl except for the muesli Rub together until it resembles breadcrumbs, lastly add the muesli rubbing gently into the crumble.

Sprinkle over the apples, pop in the oven 180c/160c Fan/Gas 4. Cook until the crumble is browning, approx. 30mins to 1 hour.

That’s it, just enjoy. Alison x
